#1 - There are two audiences in the impeachment process, the congress in total, and the viewing public. While sheer partisan politics on the part of the GOP Senators may make a non-conviction a foregone conclusion, I think the reaction of the other audience may be decidedly different. Btw, an acquittal is more likely to anger voters as they know the jury has been "rigged". So, no an acquittal does not mean re-election and frankly I believe the reverse to be true. Resultingly, more information detrimental to Trump and his chance, is certain to be introduced to America, during the process. That's what happened in Watergate and I expect the same this time.

#2 - My recollection of the Clinton/Lewinsky affair was much more about perjury as it pertained to the impeachment process than the "blow by blow" of the affair itself. This pre-dated the Me Too thing by 20 years.

#3 My expectations are that Trump (if he runs) will lose. I don't know that we can rely on him being "trounced". Frankly, I don't see much to support your view that an election loss does anything at all to bring him to account for his crimes, much less to return the GOP to the GOP as we knew it. In the event of a defeat, he just changes mailing addresses moves his furniture out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.....end of story. The wreckage he made remains in his wake. Who can say what the after effects will really be?

#4 - Yes the consequences to impeachment are largely unknowable, I completely agree. With that said, I wish to focus on two areas of comfort for those who wish for a just outcome. First of all, we know beyond a shadow doubt that impeachment is NOT electorally helpful to the man being impeached or his successor, if history is instructional. Both Ford and Gore were defeated in close contests due in part to their linkage with previous impeachments. Lastly and more importantly to me, impeachment is the Right thing to do, in terms of upholding the rule of law, restoring the principles you and I spoke of, and protecting our constitution.
